"There is a lesson learnt here. If you go down the pathway of the badass you're gonna lose a limb." - *frzdragon on this deviation -> [link]
HOLY CRAP I SUBMITTED SOMETHING. xD The quote is something Ky told me that was quoted from a popular artist here on DA who also has a character missing his left arm...however unlike Raito it seems to have been cut off halfway down the upper part rather then entirely removed... xD I'm not a big fan of *frzdragon myself but that quote very much applies to Mr. Jin-Mae here. xD Then again, It wasn't REALLY Raito's "badasseyness" that caused him to lose his arm but it might as well have. << It makes him look more badass then he did before....although I'm not saying he wasn't already badass, or that it was a good thing his arm got eaten off, but I mean COME ON, HOW COOL IS THE PROSTHETIC ONE??? Dx Anyways I put this in digital cause all the shading on the arm was done in PS, but the rest was all drawn in pencil. I drew it because we desperately needed a more solid design on Raito's prosthetic arm that looked like it was...I dunno...FUNCTIONAL? When it comes to tech stuff I phail....I miserably PHAIL. I spent way too much time designing that thing, cause it's one thing to design a prosthetic arm, it's another thing to design one that looks like it can be properly used. I made it a little more cyber-tech then the first design, make it look like he jacked it from a cyborg or something, rather then the "old school" kind of look of the prosthetics displayed in animes like FMA that air of something...uhh...steam powered, and much less high end. I still have a lot to do as far as this design goes, cause it's more then just a replacement for his old arm, it's also a weapon. It can shape shift into a canon type of thing, and channel his light alchemy better then his regular arm could, and it increases his strength in that arm by about tenfold. I need to redesign the hand part itself to accommodate for the shape-shifting, and re-work the area where it attaches to his shoulder to allow the arm itself to be removed from the base, which is a now permanent part of his body. Some of the design flaws I've found with this are in the shoulder area and in the elbow. The way this design is set up he'd only be able to bend his elbow so far before the bits of metal would hit each other and stop him from bending it any further. Another is in the shoulder, the design allows him to lift his arm up and down, but does not allow it to swing forward and backwards, which is DEFINITELY a huge flaw, as that would limit his ability to punch properly. I'll fix these eventually. I was also debating with myself about the pointy bit that sticks out when he bends his elbow, and whether or not that could be considered a design flaw, but it's something that was in the original design that I kept here. I figured I may extend it further and it could be used as a weapon. I will probably redesign it so it's either retractable or removable, and possibly able to be interchanged with different covers having different possible weapon functions. Oh, btw yeah in case you haven't already noticed he's sorta naked, however since nothing is showing I doubt I need a filter, and he's only naked cause the only reason I drew in Raito's body was so I could attach the arm to it. D: I got too tired working on the arm to clothe him. Also, I put him in a really gay pose, which he'll be mad at me for....however he IS gay therefore...this works. :] OH RAITO YOU ARE SUCH AN ODD BIRD. And YAY his hair is slowly growing back. xD Still with the cowlick though....*grabs hair gel and tries to make it stay down and fails miserly as it springs back up and hits him in the face* D< Okay I'm done ranting...for now at least. xD Ky, hope you like it and I'll bet you're the only one who will read the entire description. xD It's HUUUGE. _ Raito Jin-Mae © ~Kyra-Miyuki 2007 - 2008 Bellicosus © ~Kira-Miyuki & ~Kyra-Miyuki 2006 - 2008. |

On the arm itself, if I could make a few suggestions?
I've noticed in most machines with moving parts that rubber is a common element and adding some into the joints as a padding to keep the metal from grinding and wearing down may help. Rubber is pliable to a degree and might also help with the problem of the elbow not bending so well and it would help keep things out that would damage and wear on the arm like dirt and other contaminants. It's not super high tech, but it may be worth some consideration.
On the shoulder; maybe a ball joint? If it plugged into the shoulder socket and was allowed to rotate in that socket you would only need one track across the ball to allow a free range of movements and it would be reasonably similar to a human shoulder. You would only need one track for the arm itself to move on since the ball would be attached on a swiveling joint in the shoulder and allowed to rotate such that the track could be aligned horizontally, vertically, and everything in between and would hypothetically get the full range, if not more of a range, than a human arm would. Did that make any sense?
And I would keep the elbow spike, since it keeps the elbow from rotating backwards in anyway and it looks menacing even if at that length its not a practical weapon.
If you need more ideas on how things could work, maybe look at some diagrams of human bones and muscles and how they all connect and work in the arm? You're basically trying to recreate that in metal, after all.
I think that was all I had to say, feel free to ignore any of this if you don't like it, I just thought I would offer some ideas.
